DESIGNER, STORYTELLER, AND CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVER

Matthew Nickols
Designer. Storyteller. Creative Problem-Solver.

I’ve been designing for more than two decades, helping people turn complicated ideas into something clear, honest, and actually pleasant to look at. Earlier in my career, my work with The Washington Post Co. earned me a Pulitzer nomination, and I later served as an art director for Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns—proof that I can handle high stakes, tight deadlines, and the occasional existential design crisis. I gravitate toward projects where collaboration, curiosity, and good communication shape the outcome (and where no one says “make the logo bigger”).

I studied visual communication at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and developing a lifelong fondness for typography, bold imagery, and purposeful color—because someone has to care about kerning, and I’m willing to be that person.

When I’m not working, I love spending time with my young children—dodging Legos on the floor, discovering mysterious stains, and inevitably turning my head when I hear, “Watch this!” In those rare moments when I get actual time to myself, I pursue my passion for fitness (including earning my personal trainer certification), cook ambitious meals, enjoy Broadway shows, and catch up with friends.
